Dissolving Fillers: What You Need to Know
Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment for adding volume and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. However, if you’re not happy with the results or experience complications, you may be wondering if there’s a way to reverse the effects. The good news is that fillers can be dissolved using a simple and safe procedure. When you’re getting hyaluronic acid fillers injected, much of this is reversible with a medication called hyaluronidase, which works to dissolve the filler that was placed. It’s a very safe medicine and has been well-studied in the literature. Why would someone get their filler dissolved? Here are 3 reasons:
1. It doesn’t look right
there might be a visible lump that doesn’t go away or soften after 2-3 weeks of filler placement. You may notice a bluish hue to your skin that wasn’t there before where the filler was placed, this is a called a Tyndall effect and means the filler was placed in too shallow of a spot. Also if you just don’t like the way it looks, you can of course just try dissolving it.
2. A complication of some kind as occurred
If you have a pale spot, a painful spot, a hard lump, a concern for infection – these are all reasons it might be safer to dissolve the filler. Definitely reach out to your provider to discuss this ASAP if you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms.
3. You want a clean slate
You may be undergoing a surgical procedure such as a subnasal lip lift or a facelift where your facial plastic surgeon feels it would be best to dissolve any existing filler to get a more optimal surgical result. Or, you may have gotten a bit carried away with filler over time and looked in the mirror one day and felt, “too much,” in which case some patients want to start with a clean slate, in which case hyaluronidase would be the best way to do this.
How Fillers are Dissolved
The procedure to dissolve fillers involves injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase into the treated area. Hyaluronidase breaks down hyaluronic acid, which is the main ingredient in most dermal fillers. This allows the filler to be naturally absorbed by the body and eliminated through the lymphatic system.
