Chin Evaluation: A Comprehensive Guide – Part 2

In Part 1 of our chin evaluation series, we discussed the importance of a comprehensive evaluation when considering a chin augmentation. In Part 2, we’ll explore the different treatment options available for chin enhancement.

Underprojected Chin

So if you’ve determined that your chin is underprojected, the next step is to look at your bite and overall jaw structure. If your teeth come together in a normal way and you don’t have an underbite, then your chin alone is the concern. If you have issues with your teeth and your whole jaw seems to be involved, then this is where you will want to get an oral surgeon involved, as this will be better addressed with a jaw advancement surgery. This type of total jaw positional issue cannot be fixed with a simple chin implant, as you can see here she actually needed jaw advancement surgery but got a chin implant, and it ended up looking unnatural and deepening this crease. So if your jaw is fine and you just have a small chin, there are two options for you. One is permanent, and that’s a chin implant.

Chin Implants

I think a lot of patients get scared of the idea of chin implants, saying then don’t want to end up with a Jay Leno chin. Of course that is not the surgeon’s goal either! Chin implants can be customized to the appropriate size and shape for your face.

Chin implants are made of biocompatible materials, such as silicone or porous polyethylene, and are designed to enhance the size and projection of the chin. There are two main techniques for implant placement, one is through your mouth and the other is through the underside of the chin. There are pros and cons to these two methods and you can talk with your facial plastic surgeon about which might be best for you.

Chin Filler

The other options for chin augmentation is filler, and this is of course going to be a temporary. The advantage is you have more control over the amount and placement of the filler and you can avoid a surgery. However if you do this repeatedly, say every year, this will end up being much more costly in comparison to the permanent implant. If you’re on the fence about chin augmentation, a good option might be to start with filler, see if you like the look, and then decide with your surgeon from there if you’d like an implant placed.
