Facelift: Am I Ready?

A question I hear asked frequently is “when is the best time for me to get a facelift?” Patients are generally wondering whether they should wait until they have more signs of aging.

I think the answer to this question is actually one that the patient can answer themselves, better than the surgeon. Anyone thinking about their readiness for a facelift should ask themselves 3 questions:

1. How much am I bothered by what I’m seeing in the mirror.

Undergoing facial surgery can be a journey with potentially a few ups and downs, and the recovery might not be something you want to go through if you’re only started to notice a few things that bother you in the mirror.

2. What degree of change am I looking for?

There are endless options for nonsurgical treatments for the face and neck, and most of these treatment produce real but subtle results when compared to a facelift. If you think one of those will suffice, then I would opt for that first.

3. Will I still want this surgery in 5 years?

If this is something that you’ve been thinking about for awhile and you know that you’re going to feel the same way no matter what 5 years down the road, then my opinion would be to go for it now.

Consider the Following Factors:

There are several factors to consider when deciding if you’re ready for a facelift. Firstly, you should be in good overall health with no underlying medical conditions that could increase the risks associated with surgery. Secondly, you should have realistic expectations for what a facelift can achieve. It’s important to understand that a facelift can turn back the clock, but it cannot stop the aging process altogether.

Lastly, you should be prepared for the recovery process. Facelift surgery requires downtime for the body to heal and for swelling and bruising to subside. You’ll need to take time off work and avoid strenuous activities for several weeks after the procedure.
